BELIEVE THE NUMBERS

Bottle of Moonshine is born in 2003, when seven young busters from Belgium discover Jamaican music and decide to start an instrumental ska band. The band is named after the well-known homemade booze, which is secretly brewed in the most dubious bathtubs in the American and Caribbean countryside. A sip of this devilish liquor sets your heart on fire and gets the party started. After a first brief collaboration with a female vocalist (2004-2005), the band expands its horn section to five pieces and starts to perform on a more regular basis, in Belgium and abroad. In 2010, Bottle of Moonshine releases its first EP, “Never trust the suits”, full of Jamaican grooves (ska, rocksteady and reggae).

In 2012, vocalist Hanne Peetermans enters the lives of the ten musicians and sweeps them of their feet. She quickly takes on the role of leading lady, adding a dash of style, a wonderful voice and a whole lot of soul to the instrumental grooves. Together, they start to work on a first full album, entitled “Everybody watches, no one knows” (2013), which is produced by Marc Tee Thijs (The Internationals, Soulwax) and mixed by Staf Verbeeck (dEUS, Amparanoia ft Calexico, Absynthe Minded...). This album is met with enthusiasm by Belgian press and the single “Frankly” gets regular airplay on a national radio station. The release of the album is followed by two summers of mashing up festivals throughout Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany and a memorable show in the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, where Bottle of Moonshine acts as firestarter for The Specials.

In the meantime, the band composes a second album, “Believe the numbers”, which is recorded and produced by Reinhard Vanbergen (Das Pop) in the legendary Jet Studio in Brussels (The Rolling Stones, Edith Piaf…) and features compositions influenced by ska, rock, surf and soul. After a series of release shows in Belgium (Petrol, Charlatan, De Kuub), Bottle of Moonshine is proud to present this album at the London International Ska Festival (2016).

In 2003 ontdekken zeven Kempenzonen de Jamaicaanse muziek en richten ze een instrumentale skaband op, die ze Bottle of Moonshine dopen, naar de zelfgestookte drank die het daglicht schuwt. Een slok van dit gevaarlijke goedje, dat stiekem in de meest obscure badkuipen op het Amerikaanse vasteland en in de Caraïben wordt gebrouwen, steekt de ingewanden in de fik en zet het feest in gang. Na een kort intermezzo met zangeres (Valerie Van Roey), dat leidt tot een finaleplaats op de Kunstbende in 2005, breidt de band haar blazerssectie uit tot vijf stuks en gaat het speelritme de hoogte in. Bottle of Moonshine bouwt doorheen de jaren een stevige live-reputatie op met optredens in muziektempels op Belgische bodem (Lintfabriek, Trix, Magasin 4...) en in de buurlanden. In 2010 verschijnt de eerste EP, “Never trust the suits”, waarop de band laveert tussen reggae, ska, latin en rocksteady.

De grote kentering volgt in het najaar van 2012, wanneer zangeres Hanne Peetermans komt binnenwaaien. Ze wordt het gezicht van het elfkoppige collectief en voegt een stevige scheut soul toe aan de sound van de band. In deze bezetting brengt Bottle of Moonshine zijn eerste langspeler uit, “Everybody watches, no one knows” (2013), een productie van Marc Tee Thijs (The Internationals, Soulwax), met Staf Verbeeck (dEUS, Absynthe Minded, Ozark Henry...) aan de knoppen voor de mix. Dit debuutalbum krijgt lovende reacties van de pers (o.a. **** in De Standaard) en de single “Frankly” haalt in 2014 de vaste roulatie van Radio 2. Hierna volgen twee drukke zomers op de planken in België en Nederland (Zwarte Cross, Gentse Feesten – afsluiter op Sint-Jacobs – Afro-C, Reggae Geel...) en een passage in de Ancienne Belgique, waar Bottle of Moonshine de aftrap mag geven voor de skaveteranen van The Specials.

Intussen starten de voorbereidingen voor een nieuwe plaat, waarvoor de band samenwerkt met Reinhard Vanbergen (Das Pop), wat resulteert in een aanstekelijke en toegankelijke set songs, met invloeden uit ska, rock, surf en soul. Dit album, dat “Believe the numbers” heet, wordt opgenomen in de legendarische Jet Studio te Brussel en wordt in het najaar van 2015 losgelaten op het publiek. Na een reeks releaseshows in België (Petrol, Charlatan, De Kuub), zal de band dit album presenteren op het London International Ska Festival (2016).
